CLUB NEWS ITEMS

  • We meet the first Sunday of each month (except July & Aug)
    at 2.00pm at 311 Park Ave E.
  • "Fálkinn" Icelandic Canadian Club of Western Manitoba annually offers 2-3 $300.00 scholarships to members of families affiliated with our club. Contact Bob Isleifson for details regarding applications.
  • Each year we take a day trip to visit other clubs or sites that have a Icelandic connection.
  • Thorrblot/ Tombola will be held on May 06 2006
  • Our annual Christmas Dinner event, with live local entertainment, will be held in early December. Details TBA
  • A nominal membership fee is charged to all members on an annual basis, in order to maintain the operation of this group. For more details on how to join our group or for more information, please contact president Bob Isleifson.
  • We have been proud to be a part of the Lieutenant Governor's Annual Winter Festival since it's commencement in 2004, and look forward to future such events. In the past, our booth has been located at the Riverbank Discovery Center/Ducks Unlimited Building (545 Conservation Drive) and has included live local entertainment as well as Icelandic dishes and presentations. CHAPTER HISTORY

The Brandon Chapter was formed in 1966 and was know as "The Western Manitoba Icelandic Centennial Committee". It was later changed to "The Icelandic Canadian Club of Western Manitoba"

Minutes of the first meeting
"A representative group from the Icelandic community of Brandon met on Sunday Nov. 6th 1966 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Paul Finnbogason to discuss the nature of a suitable centennial project for 1967. Present were Mr. & Mrs. Paul Finnbogason, Mr. & Mrs. Arni Josephson, Dr. & Mrs. Fred Fjelsted, Mr. & Mrs. Oli Thorsteinson, Mr. & Mrs. J. Simmons, Mrs. Christianson and Mr. & Mrs. B Thordarson. After general discussion an executive committee and the name was set up as follows:

The organization should be known as The Western Manitoba Icelandic Centennial Committee. Executive committee should consist of:
President - Mrs. Paul Finnbogason,
Secretary - Barney Thordarson,
Treasurer- Oli Thorsteinson.
Committee members - Arni Josephson, Mrs. Fred Fjelsted and Mrs. J. Simmons

Moved by Arni Josephson seconded by Mrs. Oli Thorsteinson that the above be officially approved. Carried.

Moved by Mrs. Oli Thorsteinson seconded by Mrs. Arni Josephson that the centennial project be to place copies of the Icelandic Sagas into the Brandon College library. Carried.

Moved by Mr. J. Simmons seconded by Paul Finnbogason that two of the principal officers be signing officers for the committee's bank account at te Royal Bank. Carried.

Moved by Arni Josephson seconded by Mrs. Oli Thorsteinson that each member present be assessed a $1.00 initial Membership. Carried.

It was decided that each of the group would make a list of names of as many Icelandic Brandon residents as came to mind, from which a master list could be compiled for use of the committee. The meeting was adjourned at 2:45 pm."
