Hope for spring/Von um voriđ

Hope for spring/Von um voriđ is offered through a partnership between the Desautels Faculty of Music of the University of Manitoba and  the Icelandic Department of The University of Manitoba. It will be featuring Professor Sibbi Bernhardsson, head of the String Department of the world-renowned Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio.

The concert is unique in that it features the compositions of both Icelandic and Icelandic Canadian composers, one of whom is Kenley Kristofferson who grew up in Gimli.  Other composers are Icelanders Anna Thorvaldsdottir and Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson and Icelandic Canadian Fjòla Evans.

Two Masters of Music candidates, Miguel Stamato, viola and Breno Barone, cello will be playing with professional musicians the Brahms Sextet in G Major Op. 36.

Professor and Icelandic violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson joined the Oberlin string faculty in the fall of 2017 after performing for the previous 17 years with the Pacifica Quartet, with which he won a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance, Musical America Ensemble of the Year honors and the Avery Fisher Career Grant. He serves as director of the Cooper International Violin Competition at Oberlin and in 2019 was appointed artistic director of Iceland’s Harpa International Music Academy. He has performed worldwide including at Wigmore Hall (London), Suntory Hall (Tokyo) and Carnegie Hall (New York). In 2020 Bernhardsson collaborated with his colleague, piano professor Peter Takács to release a recording, Schubert: Three Sonatas for Piano and Violin, Op. 137.
