Information update about the Viking Ship, DRAKEN HARALD HARFAGRE visiting Toronto. ( July 1 -3, 2016)

This Viking long ship will be part of the Redpath Waterfront Festival being presented by Ports Toronto at Harbourfront in Toronto from July 1st to July 3rd, 2016.

The 114 foot long oak hull, douglas fir mast and hemp rigged classic Viking long ship ship left Norway in April and has successfully crossed the North Atlantic, via Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and now making its way westward through the St. Lawrence seaway en route to Toronto. The ship will join up with the international fleet of tall ships from around the world for its onward voyage for visits to ports in the upper great lakes in Canada and USA throughout the summer.

The ship has 260 square meters of silk sail, and is also equipped with 50 oars, with 2 sailors required per oar. The crew consists of 52 sailors from 9 countries, including Jeff Lievre, the only Canadian crew member, originally from Vancouver Island. Crew selection was made from over 4,000 applicants, from around the world.

The purpose of this exciting project is to celebrate one of the most mythological sea voyages – the Viking discovery of the New World around the year 1,000 and the early settlement at L’anse aux Meadows in north west Newfoundland. The project is expected to create good will and inspire people to go beyond the horizon into a modern Viking saga.

Everyone is encouraged to visit Harbourfront in Toronto during the July 1st to 3rd period when the Viking long ship will be on display.
