In 1974 the Stephan G Stephansson Icelandic Society was formed to promote awareness of Icelandic culture and encourage community involvement. Through restoration projects, managing and interpreting them, Markerville Creamery, Lutheran Church, Fensala Hall, Tindastoll cemetery and the Buttermaker House, the tiny hamlet on the banks of the Medicine River is a joy to visit.   Kolfinna Von Arnardóttir
As a teenager Kolfinna Von Arnardóttir would visit with her Amma and spend time perusing a collection of old fashion design magazines that her Amma had collected. Together they enjoyed studying the fashions and they even designed and made a few dresses that Kolfinna wore to celebratory events including her own college graduation. From there a career a fashion was born leading Kolfinna to study fashion in Iceland, California and ultimately earning a Masters degree from Istituto Europeo de Design in Milan. Today she is the CEO of Reykjavik Fashion Festival and Reykjavik Fashion Academy and is a member of FKA, a professional network for Icelandic business leaders where the core is to provide support to women by helping them to manage and grow their businesses. The subject of gender equality is a passionate subject for Kolfinna who entered the world of business as a young woman and saw first hand the need for an organization like FKA. Sindri Sigurgeirsson The Icelandic sheep is descended from the Northern European short tail breeds and was brought to Iceland by the Vikings in the middle ages. The vigour, hardiness and variety of uses for these sheep made them a cornerstone of the Viking settlement and later development of Icelandic culture. Genetically the Icelandic sheep is the same today as it was 1100 years ago. It is possibly the oldest and purest domesticated breed of sheep in the world today. Sindri Sigurgeirsson, has been a farming leader for a number of years and a farmer himself for over 20 years. He studied farming at the Agricultural University of Iceland and business at the University of Bifrost, doing part of his studies at the University of Winnipeg in Manitoba. Today he is Chairman of the Icelandic Farmer’s Association and runs a sheep farm at Bakkakot in the western part of Iceland. |
