Icelandic Literature
It’s often said that one in ten Icelanders will publish a book and it’s possible this isn’t that much of an exaggeration. With a 99% literacy rate, reading and writing is a very important part of Icelandic culture and has been for centuries. From the old Sagas and Poetic Eddas, to more Modern literature that has been internationally recognized (such as Yrsa Sigurðardóttir and Halldór Laxness), there is no shortage of Icelandic literature.
Literature has also been regarded as very important in preserving the Icelandic language and therefore the youth are encourage to read with Christmas gifts often being books coming from the new releases in the months before the holidays termed “Jólabókaflóðið.”
