Saga Connections #3: Rediscovering Kinmount: Part 2 of the Icelandic Settlement Story

The next Saga Connections is this Wednesday!

In our first Saga Connections live online webinar, late last year, Kinmount: An Experiment in Settlement, we learned the tragic story of the Icelanders who came to Kinmount in the autumn and cold winter of 1874-75. They were offered employment by the Victoria Rail Company, working on a rail link between Lindsay and Kinmount, and brought to live in shanties on a riverbank at the forest edge. Here many died, including mothers, fathers and especially children. They were buried in unmarked graves and the survivors moved west in the following autumn to the promise of better times in Gimli, Manitoba and elsewhere.

This week we dive back into this compelling topic with Rediscovering Kinmount: Part 2 of the Icelandic Settlement Story, which will explore the "present day" story, where we will learn how our ICCT members uncovered the heart of the story, and created a permanent memorial. This lively webinar will feature discussion with Gudrun S. Girgis, the artist/sculptor who designed and made the monument to remember and honour those who perished that cold winter and into the next year, Don Gislason, the principal researcher of the Kinmount story, and many others involved in this important time in our Club's history.

Join us for our next live webinar: "Saga #3: Rediscovering Kinmount: Part 2 of the Icelandic Settlement Story" at 7:30pm Wednesday March 3rd. Pre-registration is required. This is a virtual ticketed event and tickets are $8 to the general public, and FREE for ICCT members in good standing.
