Walk to the rock
Wednesday, October, 21, 2020 marked 145 years since the landing of the first immigrants to New Iceland here in what we today call Willow Island. Each year on this date, the descendants of these immigrants and friends here in Gimli participate in a walk to the rock to remember this important event. This year, some walked along the shores of Lake Winnipeg while others met at the monument to pay tribute to these first immigrants. It was a snowy day, but these tough Icelanders braved the elements as their forefathers did so many years ago.
